12 week old havanese puppy.
A lot of people will tell you how to tell a dog not to go, I'll tell you to teach a dog when to go. Training a dog to go on command is very helpful. Depending on the age and size of your dog will decide how often you take the dog out. But when you do take your dog out I suggest picking a command, I use 'better hurry'. When the dog is outside to go potty I tell the dog to better hurry over and over until they start to pee or poop. Once the dog starts peeing or pooping, I get really excited and say "Yes! that's it! Good job! Yes! you're such a good boy!" The entire time they're doing it. when they finish I promptly give them a treat. Usually something small, just a taste is all I'm giving them. Eventually you get them to do this on command and they'll want to do this outside because they get praise and a treat for doing so. eventually once they get it down you can just do praise only. It's like teaching a toddler to use the toilet, you get excited with them to make the whole concept fun and exciting so they'll do it again.
If they go in the house tell them no, clean it up then take them outside . They're probably not done going. Do the same process with them. tell them to better hurry when the start doing it get excited, end with treat. Hope this helps and good luck!

Well, after your puppy eats/drinks take him/her out to go potty. It can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes before your puppy needs to pee and a little longer for them to need to poop. When you bring your pup outside tell it "go potty" when your pup goes potty praise him/her. Say "good girl/boy" and give them a treat. Just keep doing this. As your pup gets older, it can wait a little longer before needing to go out, but every time you take your dog out say "go potty." If your dog does mess in the house: If you catch them in the act, say "no" and promptly bring them out to finish their business. If you see the mess, but didnt see them going just clean it up and for poop you pick it up and put it outside in the potty area. Bring your dog with you and let them sniff it on their own. When they sniff the poop, say "good boy/girl" that will reinforce that the bathroom is outside, not inside.
First, you want to watch for the signs that your pup has to go, such as walking in a circle, as soon as they wake from a nap, and sniffing the floor. If you see these put him out immediately. Put the puppy out every half hour, and give the dog a treat when he potties outside, and scold him if he goes in the house. Keep this up and he will be potty trained in no time! =)
