Are You Fit to Own a Dog? – Research Your First Dogs' Needs
Have you seen the pet rescuers on TV and the many dogs rescued because their owners have neglected or abandoned them? Many cases out of pure cruelty, but many from the original owners who ran out of money, or patience with a troubled dog. This is why I ask you to look into your situation with your family, your income, your neighborhood and generally research your pluses and minuses of keeping a dog.
A dog is like a child in that it needs your time, affection and attention. You will need to train your dog; you will also need to love your dog as it becomes part of your family. It is important to choose the right breed, especially if you have children, Do your homework, research breed, food cost, vet fees, and pet insurance.
Watch the Dog Whisperer, Caesar Milan; you will see all sorts of people problems that course dog problems. He as a dog trainer many times has to train the dog owners before they can successfully look after their dog. Look into your lifestyle, be sure you are OK before attempting to look after a dog.
It is a wonderful thing to have a dog in your family, but you must always remember that it is not a family to a dog it is a pack, with a ranking system. Your dog must not be treated above its rank or it will assume dominance of the pack/family, then you have a problem. You are the Alpha, the leader must lead, and you must be in control. Be kind, but be firm.
