Gourmet Dog Biscuits Are Good

Nothing’s too good for your dog, so why not splurge on some gourmet dog biscuits that he is going to love! Did you know that dog biscuits first made an appearance way back in the 1800s when a London butcher first made up a batch for his customers? He tasted one and gagged; he threw it to his dog and the dog loved it and the rest as they say is history.

Dog biscuits are dry and hard and contain protein, fat, carbohydrates and fiber. The biscuits undergo the same making process as biscuits for human consumption. Raw materials and mixed and kneaded into a dough, then rolled out, cut, baked and packaged. Today the dog food market is one of the largest industries and not surprising since well over 50% of all households in America have dogs.

Gourmet dog biscuits are a more recent entrant in the dog food arena and there are stores all across the country that provide delicious, tasty, mouthwatering (canine and human) snacks and treats and even food for dogs. Biscuits are one of the favorite treats that are very popular with dog owners. You don’t really need to give your dog treats when you are giving him a well balanced meal, but who can resist those adoring eyes – not me! Rather than giving the dog scraps from the table or the biscuits we eat that has a lot of sugar and preservatives, it is better to give it all natural dog biscuits that are custom made for dogs. These biscuits are nutritious, palatable and easy to digest.

With all the dog food scares that have been in the news it is always good to know what actually goes into the making of your dog’s food and snacks. Gourmet biscuits are mostly all natural and contain the following:

Protein: animal and plant protein ingredients are added to the biscuits to provide amino acids, increase energy and make the biscuits taste good. Plant protein is from corn and soy and it is best to avoid biscuits that have them because they cause allergies in dogs. Go with animal protein meat and bone meal, liver meal and egg.

Carbohydrates: corn, wheat or rice flours are used in abundance and are a great source of carbohydrates. Here again it is better to stay off the corn and choose the biscuits made with wheat and rice flours.

Fiber: is also an essential nutritional ingredient that is added to dog biscuits. Since wheat bran is added to the making of the biscuits you get plenty of extra fiber. It is useful to control calories and helps with water absorption.

Fats and oils: provide flavor and a certain amount of nutritional energy and are derived from fish, plants and animal sources. They have a big impact on the finish of the biscuits as well.

Additives: apart from the ingredients listed above, dog biscuits have antioxidants added to them to help check the breakdown of vitamins and other nutrients that are found in the biscuit. It also helps to keep the biscuits fresh. Dogs prefer meat and fish flavors or so studies show, hence flavor enhancers are added to the biscuits.
