Now that we’re looking into how to train a Labrador, let’s take a closer look at the breed itself. Known as great working dogs and loyal pets, The Labrador is one of the most popular types of dogs in America. They are gentle, intelligent, energetic and good natured making them excellent pets.

Learning how to train a labrador is not very difficult. There are very intelligent dogs who take and follow direction really well so once you communicate to them what you want they pick it fairly quickly. However, they’re also very exuberant creatures with tons of energy which is where all that jumping comes from.

So why is your Labrador jumping on you anyway? More than likely he’s just excited and being friendly. Unlike some dogs who like to use jumping to show dominance, a Labrador is most likely just showing you his pleasure at seeing you.

Pick a specific command to use when your Labrador jumps on you and show your displeasure with the action. When he jumps give the command firmly and use body language to show how unhappy you are.

Give your Labrador positive reinforcement when he stops the jumping. Labradors love praise so let him know you’re pleased with his efforts. Give him the reward of a big hug and pet him. The attention will be well received.

When you’re trying to figure out how to train a Labrador not to jump on you, you’ll find that because of his intelligent nature it’s not that hard at all. It only takes a little time and lots of affection.
