Small Dogs – The Whippet, Welsh Terrier, and the Brussels Griffon
If you don’t have a favorite dog, it can be hard to decide which breed to buy. The first step is to look at the size of the dog you want. Do you have the space for a large dog? Or do you live in a small house or apartment? Small dogs can provide great company. And there are a lot of different types of small dogs, vastly unique in both temperament and appearance. You probably know about toy dogs, however there are others that bear more resemblance to their larger cousins.
We’ll look at 3 different breeds in this article – brussels griffons, whippets, and welsh terriers.
Brussels Griffons
According to rumors the large, soulful eyes of the brussels griffon were part of the inspiration behind the creation of the ewoks by George Lucas in the Star Wars films. And looking at pictures of them, you can see why people think this.
Brussels griffons are particularly sensitive and devoted dogs who will bond with one person in particular. They need to be socialized when they are young pups. Brussels griffon are not really well suited as a family pet due to their sensitivity and one-person nature.
One of the great things about the brussels griffon is that they get along well with cats, as well as other dogs, although care should be taken when they are with dogs a lot bigger than them.
Welsh Terrier Information
Welsh terriers have been described as calm for a terrier, but maybe not as calm as other dogs. They are sturdy looking dogs with lots of personality, particularly the males. Welsh terriers are curious, affectionate, extroverted, joyous, and without fear.
Initially, Welsh terriers were used to control rats and other vermin, consequently welsh terriers love to chase things – including cats. So,, if you already have a cat, or are planning on getting one, this may not be the ideal dog for you.
Great with children, welsh terriers really need a ‘dog proof’ yard as they do love to dig, and could thus escape. When taking your welshie for a walk, make sure he stays on the leash, as his road sense when on a quest for fun is not very good.
Welsh terriers need quite a bit of time from their owners. They need regular grooming, and get bored if left by themselves for the normal workday. They are better suited to someone with a part time job rather than a full time job. When they’re bored, they can cause destruction around the house.
Whippet Dog Breed
Whippets are a type of sighthound dog, so known as that as they hunt by using their keen eyesight and great speed, instead of using smell like scent hounds. whippets are petite, elegant dogs, with heights that span 17.5 to 20 inches. And the whippet dog breed look just like miniature greyhounds!
Whippets have been described as being like toy dogs in temperament, liking nothing better than curling up on your lap. They are very loyal to their owner, though still friendly to strangers and children. The whippet dog breed are very gentle, so much so that they have been used in aged care facilities.
These dogs should be kept indoors. With such thin coats, they will be too cold outside, and they have a strong bond to their owners. They make great apartment dogs if you are willing to exercise them regularly.
